General information
- Regular check out is before 10am, but flexible if we do not host new guests, please check with us. Check in is after 4pm.
- We offer a small variety of books and you are welcome to take a book with you, if you leave another one in exchange (Belize related guide books are excepted).
- The house is a non-smoking area, please smoke downstairs on the dock or in the garden, but use an ashtray, as especially when it is dry, vegetation easily catches fire!
- We provide you with toilet paper, kitchen paper, soaps, shampoo/conditioner, coffee, sugar, creamer, filter, detergent, dish washing liquid, a few spices etc. to get you started. However, please note that this is a self-contained vacation home and you are supposed to provide everything that you need yourself. The local stores are well stocked and carry all necessary items.
Safety
Security:
If leaving the property during the night, ensure you lock the house and your room, as well as the bathroom door from the inside and do not leave any valuable belongings like computers, phones, tablets, jewelry laying around and close to the windows or screens- we live in a quiet and safe neighborhood, but better safe than sorry. Keep windows closed when it rains or when leaving home, otherwise it might get wet inside.
Fire:
The house is equipped with two fire extinguishers (on the left corner, opposite the 2nd bedroom. and under the house) and smoke detectors in each bedroom. If you can´t handle the fire, leave the house immediately and contact us and /or the fire department.
Be careful when using candles etc. it is a wooden building!
Read the emergency plan carefully. The property manager is trained in fire safety.
Gas:
If you leave for more than one day we recommend shutting of the valve of the gas tank. In case you detect any gas smell do not light a fire or turn on a light, leave the house and shut the valve at the gas tank downstairs. Inform us immediately.
Dock:
Please read the dock rules which are next to the fish cleaning station. Supervise your children at all times. Do not feed the fish. The canal and the lagoon are not suitable for swimming.
Eco-Tips
Garbage:
The trash bin is under the house. Please put your trash in plastic bags (quite useful are the plastic bags you get your groceries in), tie them up and always put the cover back on the trash bin, (otherwise the raccoons have party time). Trash pickup is Tuesdays and Saturdays morning, please bring the bin to the main road in the morning, not the night before.
Butane gas:
The stove works with Butane gas. Please let us know if you need a refill.
Water:
We provide you with 2 x 5 Gallon bottles for drinking and cooking. You can get them at any supermarket, just take the empties as there is a deposit on the bottle. The tap water is from the rain water catchment and not advisable for consumption, please use it conservatively, especially during dry season March to June.
In case of a power outage the water pump will shut off if the water pressure drops to 0, it needs to be manually restarted- which means if it was during the night, you might not have water till the morning.
Electricity:
Electricity is expensive in Belize and we try to save energy.
The hot water is provided by an on demand electric water heater. It might take a little while as the cold water in the pipes has to be replaced before it gets hot. Please use it conservatively.
We do get power outages, there is nothing we can do about it. In case of an outage there is a rechargeable backup flash light.
We recommend using surge protectors for your own electrical equipment or to unplug it during storms.
Toilet:
You can dispose toilet paper in the toilet. Please do not dispose any other garbage, sanitary pads, tampons, baby wipes, condoms etc. into the toilet as this will create troubles, blocking, etc. for our septic system.
Cleaning:
We do not provide a cleaning service. Please use the cleaning agents and cleaning utensils made available to you. We can also arrange a cleaning service if desired at additional charge.
Please use olive oil on the wooden cutting boards and on the cast iron skillets after cleaning.
Laundry:
You can do your laundry on premise. We don’t have a dryer, use cloth lines on the property. Please do not do laundry in the washing basins in the house.
Fish cleaning station:
We have a fish cleaning station underneath the house, please do not use any detergent as it drains directly into the canal. Find information about the local fishing regulations at the back of this binder.
Health Tips
Insects:
To keep them from annoying you in the house keep the door closed, especially during dusk and dawn, keep the house clean etc. We provide you with essential oil – use 3 drops in water in the candle diffuser and a tea light it will keep mosquitos and “no seems” away.

There is a first aid kit available in the bathroom underneath the sink.
Pharmacy:
You can find over the counter drugs in every supermarket. There is one pharmacy in Seine Bight at Publics and a better stocked one in Placencia Village across from Top Value Supermarket.
Clinic:
There are two doctors as well as a dental clinic in Placencia. Please find the phone numbers subsequently. For more severe issues- there is the hospital in Dangriga for emergencies, but we recommend going to Belize City to one of the two private clinics.
Communication

A local phone is available to you free of charge. The number is on the back of the phone. Use it for local calls only. Phone company: smart If you need to recharge you can do so in any supermarket.
Wildlife
We are sure you will love the idyllic wild life around the apartments as we do:
You can see Iguanas, Agoutis (Bush Rabbits), Raccoons, Chakalakas, and plenty of other birds on a regular basis. Treat them with respect and if you wish you can feed them with fruit leftovers, however bear in mind that if you leave anything too close to the house it will attract ants, etc. There is also a black cat from a neighbor. Please do not feed the cat.
There are, as we are in a subtropical environment, insects, spiders, scorpions and other critters as well.
Local Tips

A small local grocery store is to the right on the main road and the super market is 2 min to the left on the main road, right next to the police station.
